Workshop Overview
The Value Stream and Agile Release Train (ART) Identification Workshop (VSAIW) is a central building block of the Scaled Agile Framework® (SAFe®). This workshop serves to define the value streams of development and to design Agile Release Trains (ARTs) that work across existing departmental boundaries and silos. The aim of the workshop is to minimize organizational obstacles and optimize the flow of value. The VSAIW provides a systematic way to identify value streams and create ARTs that increase the flow of value. It supports the organization in structuring itself around the value stream and promotes cooperation across departmental boundaries. In the planning world, this work step is comparable to program planning.
Work Objectives
- Set expectations: Clarify the expectations of the workshop and the goals to be achieved.
- Agreement on the scope: Definition of the scope of the workshop and the value streams to be analyzed.
- Preparation: The Value Stream team prepares the content for the workshop, while the workshop leader supports the team in the preparation. This includes clarifying the issues, interviewing stakeholders and defining the scope.
- Inviting the right people: See target group section
- Conducting empathy interviews: To ensure that there is a task that needs to be solved and to create a common alignment.
- Implementation: Creation of value streams, derivation of ARTs, definition of teams per ART, role definition per team, ART and, if applicable, solution
Budgeting and resource planning are carried out in a separate Lean Budgeting Workshop.
Target Group
Representatives of the Lean-Agile Center of Excellence (LACE) and other transformation managers who will support the SAFe® implementation and facilitate the workshop. Executives and decision makers who have the authority to define and support cross-silo ARTs. Shareholders, supervisory board members, managing directors, board members and business owners who understand the workflow in the operational value streams. Specialists and key users who can identify the activities involved and the people working on them.
In the initial phase, this workshop is ideally led by an experienced SAFe® expert and transferred to an internal SAFe® Practice Consultant (SPC) of the customer once an appropriate level of maturity has been reached.
Prerequisites
- SAFe® Agilist (SA) certification or SAFe® Practitioner (SP) certification
- SAFe® Lean Portfolio Management (LPM) certification
- Course participants need a stable and high-performance internet connection for the remote workshop, ideally a headset and a camera.
- On-site courses require a professional workshop environment that is appropriate for the number of participants. Above all, the room size, ventilation, background noise and equipment must be right. Sometimes it makes sense to hire an external conference room for this purpose. This environment must be available to the workshop leader on the day before the first day of the course for preparation and testing. In the event of questions or problems, the workshop leader needs a contact person from the customer.
